Positive emotions make us go, and negative emotions make us stop. From building muscle to learning a language, change takes time: we need to keep going. As all coaches and clinicians know, a client's consistency is often the biggest challenge.

We can solve this problem (and many more) by designing positive emotion. But what does that mean? It means setting meaningful goals. It means supporting autonomy. It means facilitating focus. It means building confidence. It means feeling lightness. It means rediscovering playfulness.

Positive emotion isn't just about learning to feel good (which is important). It's also about knowing how to manage feeling bad, so we don't get carried away on downward spirals. The Joy Study Teacher Training will teach you how to work with both positive and negative emotion. You'll develop an intuition for injecting more joy, meaning and curiosity into life and work, and at the same time, learn how to manage shame, anxiety and self-consciousness; major barriers to joy.

As clinicians and coaches, we have the opportunity to spark subtle shifts in people's lives. With the right perspective, these shifts can be far reaching; as the relaxation, presence and resilience engendered by joy permeates into all aspects of our lives and relationships. 

What you'll learn

Communication

Good communication makes us relaxed and focused. Bad communication makes us subtly stressed; leading to anxious behaviour. And here's the trick: good communication isn't just about the words we use. It's also about how we feel personally and connect interpersonally. The Teacher Training will share practices for meeting needs, cultivating curiosity and connecting authentically.

Attention

The more distracted we are, the worse we feel. The more times we meet the present moment with clarity, calm and concentration, the more resilient, joyful and available we are. The Teacher Training will take you through a crash course in being present; teaching you Buddhist theories of joy and suffering, and three different meditation styles. We will also look at how setting meaningful goals affects our movement and psychology; from the sports science of communication to the depth psychology of uncovering hidden dreams and fears.

Body

We perceive with our whole body. Our tendons and muscles are involved with perception just as much as our eyes and ears. Relaxation is a precursor to vitality, curiosity and play. Feeling confident is also key. We can gain confidence through progressive impact training, dynamic flexibility and rolling exercises. By reducing injury risk from falls and muscle strains, we learn to trust ourselves more to explore, let go and progress in movement.

Environment

Why is it more fun to run downhill than uphill? Help people get into deeper states of focus by designing games and inviting play. Play isn't just something that children do. It's an engine of learning and experimentation that builds resilience and meaning in adults. To invite people into play, you really need to practice it yourself. The Teacher Training will share lifestyle practices on finding play in the everyday.
